Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture Faculty Search:
Two Tenure-Track Positions

Position Description
The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Architecture (SoA) is searching for two tenure track faculty at the rank of assistant and/or associate professor who work on issues of sustainability, resiliency and social equity in buildings, cities and environments, and who engage our most pressing global challenges linked to the built environment.

  • Building Performance: Candidates with design expertise in building science, data analytics, building performance simulation, building information modeling, diagnostic, building energy systems, energy grids, water resource management, and enhanced building delivery processes are encouraged to apply.
  • Resilient Cities and Urban Ecology: Candidates with design expertise in urban ecology, urban design/planning, sustainable infrastructure, socio-ecological processes, energy policy, urban policy, urban regeneration in post-industrial regions, and with an interest in shaping the global response of cities to environmental, environmental justice and socio-economic challenges, are encouraged to apply.

The SoA is looking for creative individuals with a strong background or emerging potential that elevate the discipline of architecture through exceptional teaching, design, research, scholarly inquiry, artistic production, and/or professional practice.

Successful candidates will be expected to build upon the SoA’s rich history of research, practice, and innovation in sustainability and systems integration across different scales. They should work collaboratively to envision, craft and advance the discipline through their teaching and scholarship at both graduate and undergraduate levels. We seek candidates who demonstrate the potential to be leaders in our PhD programs through successful external fund raising and outstanding advising, and/or those who demonstrate the ability to positively impact the profession.

Candidates who will contribute to diversity and inclusivity in the design disciplines through their teaching, research, mentoring, and service are strongly encouraged to apply.

School Description
If your creative work is breaking new ground, you will find an encouraging, stimulating environment within our dynamic community. Our school is a team of dedicated educators, designers, researchers, practitioners, and interdisciplinary collaborators. Faculty members teach studios and/or coursework appropriate to their specialization(s) across the School’s many programs, including the B. Arch, M. Arch, post-professional Master’s (both MS and studio-based) and the doctoral programs.

Our student body totals 370 undergraduate and graduate students, and is situated within the College of Fine Arts, alongside the Schools of Art, Design, Drama and Music. Our university is classified as a "R1: Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity" institution. As such, a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities can be created at the school, college and/or university levels.

Our school philosophy is to provide deep immersion in the discipline of architecture, intensified by a university culture of interdisciplinary innovation and creative inquiry. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students to be excellent, discipline-defining design-thinkers in diverse global contexts. We believe that architectural excellence demands both rigorous training in fundamentals and the development of unique expertise – whether the sciences, the humanities, engineering, or computation. Though each of our students graduate with intensive architecture knowledge, no two graduates leave with the same education.

Our programs take advantage of:

  • Our position within one of the world’s leading research and entrepreneurship institutions at the interdisciplinary intersection of technology, the arts, and the humanities;
  • Specialized facilities and centers like the Robert L. Preger Intelligent Workplace, Project Re_, dFAB Lab, Code Lab, Remaking Cities Institute, and the IDeATe Physical Computing Lab;
  • The context of our dynamic, post-industrial city of Pittsburgh as a laboratory for inquiry and action.
    Tenure track faculty are typically assigned four responsibilities per year that complement their unique abilities – teaching studios at the undergraduate and graduate levels, teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advising a cohort of PhD students, directing a center, directing a lab or funded research.

Application Process
To apply, access and complete the online application form at, submitting the following materials:

  • A letter of interest that indicates your specific areas of expertise;
  • A discussion of the specific courses that you are prepared to teach (CMU faculty typically teach two courses per semester);
  • Your longer-term plans for research, scholarship, artistic and/or practice activities and attaining tenure;
  • A complete curriculum vitae;
  • A small portfolio (≤25 MB)
  • Contact information for three references, including name, position, employer, email address, phone number and your professional relationship with them;
  • For those with prior academic experience, examples of the work of your students.

Applications are due no later than Monday, 7 January 2019. Interviews with shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for early February through early March. Job offers will be extended in April and hires completed by May 2019, with employment expected to begin in August 2019.
