Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture invites applications for a full-time professor of practice in Architecture, open rank (assistant, associate, or full professor rank). This one-year position is for AY 2023-24.

The candidate will be joining Tyler’s distinguished arts and design faculty in the Architecture and Environmental Design Department. Located on a vibrant urban campus in Philadelphia, PA, Temple University has more than 38,000 students in 17 schools and colleges. Tyler offers undergraduate programs in Architecture, Facilities Management, and Historic Preservation. Graduate offerings include a professional NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture degree, a post-professional Master of Science degree, with optional concentrations in Health and Design, Advanced Technologies and Design, and Urban Ecologies and Design, and a Master of Science in Facilities Planning with an optional concentration in Health Facilities. Other Tyler degree offerings include Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Community Development, and City and Regional Planning as well as programs in the arts. Temple’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of faculty to teach graduate and undergraduate design studio, comprehensive design studio, seminar and lecture courses focused on emerging trends in design practice and practice management. The candidate will also serve on department and school committees and participate in other activities such as curriculum development.

Qualifications

The faculty member will be expected to address emerging trends and models in national and global design practice. These may include integrated systems, resilience, interdisciplinary design practice, AI in design, design for health and/or emerging guidelines and codes that address social and/or climate change. The successful candidate will be able to teach design and practice based courses focused on areas of architectural leadership.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of excellence in architectural practice leadership, teaching and mentorship in the academic and/or practice context. Candidates should be prepared to discuss how their professional network and professional resources will benefit teaching and learning in the academic context. Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience in a professional architecture program and must hold a terminal degree in architecture (Master of Architecture or international equivalent) or Bachelor of Architecture along with a post-professional degree in architecture or related discipline. Architectural registrations are preferred.

The position begins in July 2023. Applications should include a letter of intent, signed and dated curriculum vita, a professional portfolio, and documentation of recent student work through teaching and mentoring and/or sample course syllabi, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the names of three references with e-mail and telephone contact information. Finalists should be prepared to submit course evaluations for courses taught, official transcripts and three signed letters of recommendation on letterhead.
