Part-time Lecturer in Ceramics – Intro to Ceramics
Tufts University
The SMFA at Tufts University Ceramics Area is seeking a Part-Time Lecturer for a one-semester appointment for Fall 2025 starting September 4.
We are looking for an artist to teach CER-0102 Introduction to Ceramics in a lively and community-based ceramics area where college students work interdisciplinary throughout the school. The course will be available to SMFA undergraduates and graduate level students. This class is an introduction to sculptural, painterly, and functional approaches to ceramics. It explores techniques in wheel-throwing and construction for hand-building and examines the basic use of glazes fired in both oxidation and gas atmospheres at various temperatures. Class date and hours are Thursdays at 2:30-7:30pm and the appointment is for 13 weeks of instruction and additional time dedicated to review boards.
Qualifications
An MFA is required. Additional qualifications include at least 2 years of prior teaching experience at college level. Applicant must demonstrate their own unique excellence in hand building, wheel throwing, glaze chemistry as well as have their own active art practice with an exhibition history. The successful applicant should be able to lead in-class demonstrations, assign readings, engage with diverse groups of students, and create an inclusive class environment while expanding the conversation in the world of clay both materially and conceptually.
In a context where many students work cross-disciplinarily and few specialize exclusively in one medium, the successful candidate will be expected to engage with students from beginning to graduate level; to teach across a wide range of skill levels; to engage in a contemporary and global conversation at the advanced and graduate level; and to be conversant in contemporary developments in the field. Additionally, candidates should have a broad understanding of art practice and theory applicable to a variety of visual art fields.

All applications are submitted via apply.interfolio.com/172360 .
