Position Summary

The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo within the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a Production Manager to support its diverse production activities. This role oversees a wide range of events, including touring productions, concerts, dance performances, corporate events, theatrical productions, cultural programs, recitals, graduations, and academic activities.

Key responsibilities will include:
    • Coordinate event production with clients, advising on best practices and guiding them on presenting professional events and performances.
    • Schedule production staff, student assistants, and overhire crew in collaboration with the Technical Director.
    • Manage production logistics, including securing labor, equipment, supplies, and transportation.
    • Oversee hospitality and dressing room needs, ensuring high standards and compliance with contractual and rider requirements.
    • Be present at load-ins, rehearsals, performances, and load-outs, function as a stage manager when needed.
    • Coordinate and supervise crew during calls alongside the Head Carpenter, ensuring compliance with emergency and safety policies.
    • Create production reports and document event details.
    • Liaise across CFA teams to foster collaboration, ensure smooth production processes, and improve communication through meetings and updates.
    • Recruit, train, and mentor student assistants and crew, working with production department leads and the Technical Director to support their development.
    • Maintain staff scheduling and assignments using Shiftboard, ensuring event data and employee records remain current.
    • Oversee event budgets and estimates, review technical riders with Technical Director, and keep CFA management and clients informed of budget-impacting changes while maintaining confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in a related field (theatre production, event management, technical theatre) or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • At least two years of professional experience in production management or technical direction for theatrical, corporate, or music events.
  • Thorough understanding of production and event management processes, including scheduling, logistics, and technical operations.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and organizational excellence.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize, and process information quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to provide situational leadership during events.
  • Excellent client relations and communication skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly and calmly in high-pressure situations.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and industry best practices.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multi-venue performance space or academic environment, leading both professional and student crews.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and event/staff scheduling software such as Shiftboard, EMS, or similar programs.
  • Knowledge of technical riders, production logistics, and hospitality coordination for live events.


Physical Demands

  • Incumbent will frequently move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with the assistance of a dolly or cart.
  • Flexible schedule, including availability for nights, weekends, and long production shifts.


Salary Range
$58,000 - $63,000
