The SMFA at Tufts University Graphic Arts area is seeking a Part-Time Lecturer for a one-semester appointment for Fall 2024.

The successful candidate will teach GRA-0183 Artists’ Books Today on Thursdays 8:30 am - 2:00 pm.

Artists’ Books Today is a mixed media class that explores handmade artists’ books as visual poetry, narrative, document, conceptual space, memoir and museum. Binding and image making demonstrations, workshops and assigned problems expand students’ awareness of artists’ books as contemporary vehicles for content and hands-on innovation. The class explores the history and culture of artists’ books from the ancient codex, to illuminated manuscripts, chap books, altered books and draws upon global traditions, both Eastern and Western binding methods.

The instructor will also serve on end-of-semester review boards and provide feedback to students working in various media.

Qualifications

Qualifications include prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicant must demonstrate an active art practice, fluency in technical skills, history of the medium and lecturing about it. Knowledge in calligraphy and typography is a plus. The successful applicant should be able to lead in-class discussions and assigned readings, engage with diverse students, and create an inclusive class environment.

Application Instructions

All applications are submitted via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/149890. Applicants should submit a cover letter that highlights relevant experience, a CV, 10-15 images of artwork, one sample syllabus (for a related course), and the names and email addresses of two references who may be contacted at a future date.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Questions about the position can be sent to Chantal Zakari, Chair of Photo, Print and Graphic Arts, at chantal.zakari@tufts.edu

All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check.
