Director of Bands Assistant Professor
Job Description
As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks qualified applicants for a twelve-month appointment as our Director of Bands to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by providing a high-level musical instruction precise marching performances.
The Director of Bands will support Marian University’s mission by building and leading our marching band to support our collegiate, game-day experiences and add to our positive culture aligned with our dedication to the liberal arts tradition. Other responsibilities will include directing the University Band and Pep Band at regular rehearsals and performances, teaching a full-time load of courses according to the strengths of the candidate and the needs of the department, and other administrative duties. The Director of Bands will report to the Department Chair.
Responsibilities:
- Direct the University Band, Marching Band, and Pep Band
- each music and/or music education classes, potentially including classes in music technology, pedagogy, applied lessons, and/or world music, etc.
- Design and teach halftime show for all home football games
- Direct the Pep Band at all home basketball games
- Teach summer music camp programs
- Administrative duties relating to recruitment and retention
- Supervise marching band staff and oversee marching band budget
Requirements:
- Must hold a master’s degree in music, music education, or a closely related field; Preference given to those holding a Doctorate or other terminal degree, or who are ABD at the time of appointment.
- Candidates must demonstrate a successful record of recruitment and retention.
- Candidates should have experience teaching in higher education; Preference may be given to candidates that specialize in teaching courses related to marching band, pep band, elementary school music, music technology, and/or low brass.
