The Amherst College Department of Theater and Dance invites applications for a full-time two-year visiting appointment at the rank of assistant professor, which will begin on July 1, 2022. Over the past two decades, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 9 percent of our students are international students. We expect the successful candidate to excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexuality, and religion.

We seek a dance artist who can contribute course offerings in dance techniques, improvisation, composition and choreography, and courses that place the study of dance within relevant social, cultural and political contexts. We encourage applicants who possess a broad understanding of current dance practices, and from a range of areas of expertise, including those of non-Western origins. Areas of expertise could include dance practices of the African Diaspora (HipHop, Jazz, Afro-Caribbean and others), the Latinx Diaspora, or from other non-European traditions, as well as candidates with experience in dance/theater, dance video and installation, and/or who work in a fusion of movement languages. The ideal candidate can encourage and model cross-disciplinary connections among different kinds of dance and between dance and other disciplines, and must be committed to actively fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the study of dance. We expect the candidate to be a practicing artist with a strong professional track record who is interested in making work with and for students in a liberal arts context.

Responsibilities include teaching courses in dance techniques and other topics in the candidate’s areas of expertise, and advising senior projects that emphasize dance/movement as the primary focus. The successful candidate may also lead a significant artistic project with students as part of the overall teaching load. Candidates should have a terminal degree (MFA and/or PhD) with a minimum of two years of college/university teaching experience.
