The Department of Architecture at the University at Buffalo – The State University of New York (SUNY) is seeking applications for full-time, tenure-track assistant or associate professors. The search is open to scholarly and teaching expertise within the building sciences, social sciences and humanities, design, pedagogy, and other specialized areas in the discipline and practice of architecture.
The department is particularly interested in candidates with a trajectory of work that addresses the long-term consequences of systemic inequality in the built environment – such as racial, gender, economic, and other disparities resulting from colonial history, public policies, use of land and other resources, and building practices. Candidates’ work may be scholarly and/or pedagogical in focus.

Academic research may include, for example:

  • decolonizing architectural theory
  • expanding models of affordable housing
  • uncovering algorithmic bias in urban systems
  • advancing environmental justice in vulnerable neighborhoods
  • addressing health or economic disparities in construction
  • queering architectural canons or institutions

Likewise, candidates may demonstrate a focus on transformative pedagogical approaches, such as:

  • facilitating the transition of first-generation students in beginning design
  • integrating critical theory into architectural history
  • developing anti-racist teaching methods for technical courses
  • illuminating the value systems that underpin various architectural media and tools

The Department of Architecture seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities among its faculty and welcomes candidates to demonstrate how their lived experiences inform a commitment to intersectional communities, teaching, and inclusive design practices.
University at Buffalo is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and, in keeping with our commitment, welcomes all to apply including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
