Department of Landscape Architecture
College of Agriculture, Food and Environment
University of Kentucky
Full-time faculty position available: July 1, 2023
Rank: Assistant Professor
Application Deadline: April 1, 2023 (applications accepted until position is filled)
The position: The Department of Landscape Architecture (College of Agriculture, Food and Environment) at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-eligible faculty position in the regular title series at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will bring a teaching and research agenda with an intellectual focus on geospatial analysis and data representation integrated into the landscape architectural design process at a range of scales. Complements to this focus area could include teaching and scholarship in digital design visualization, landscape modeling, or digital communication strategies. The new faculty colleague will teach in the design studio sequence in landscape architecture, along with geospatial/digital graphics theory/methods/applications courses available to landscape architecture students and closely related majors. Scholarship in this position could center on innovation in methods, novel applications of geospatial and other techniques, applied research, or environmental design issues whose investigation involves geospatial analysis. This position has an expected distribution of effort (DoE) of approximately 65% instruction, 30% research/extension, and 5% service. Expected service includes participation in our College’s Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Steering Committee. The Department seeks a colleague with professional practice experience who can demonstrate the potential for success in a land grant university environment through teaching, research, and service to the university, profession, and public. Development of a documented record of scholarly productivity through peer-reviewed publications or creative works, along with external funding for research, is essential for promotion and tenure.

The Department and College: The accredited undergraduate landscape architecture program emphasizes creativity, technical competence, public participation, and environmental responsibility. The curriculum incorporates external experiences for students through internships, research experiences, service-learning projects, and international study programs. Landscape Architecture has a tradition of community engagement and multiple studios that incorporate varied service-learning projects. Faculty research and service includes community design, geospatial analysis, design thinking, green infrastructure, nature play and cultural landscapes.

The Department resides in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which houses complementary strengths and collaborative opportunities within the environmental sciences, community development, biosystems engineering, horticulture and other areas. The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky and many other off-campus facilities enrich the Department’s teaching, learning and research environments.

The University: The University of Kentucky is a rapidly growing university with approximately 23,000 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate and professional studies students. UK is the Commonwealth’s flagship university and a land grant institution. The University is positioned near downtown Lexington, offering students and faculty the vibrancy of an urban location and the immediacy of Lexington as a learning laboratory. Lexington is centered in the Bluegrass Ecoregion, an internationally acclaimed cultural landscape and agricultural region. It is a thriving community of 325,000 with a strong commitment to quality of life, education, and the arts.

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a terminal degree in landscape architecture. A Ph. D. is required (or be in progress with an expected completion date of 2023) in landscape architecture or a closely related field.

Desired qualifications: Practical experience is desired along with landscape architecture licensure.

Salary: Salaries and benefits at the University of Kentucky are competitive.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CAFE) are committed to creating an inclusive environment of mutual respect where students are encouraged to achieve their highest potential, regardless of, but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, age, ability, and socioeconomic status. The goal is to work together as a diverse group of engaged students, faculty, and staff to ensure all feel welcome, safe, accepted, and included. The University of Kentucky is an equal opportunity university. We encourage applications from women, minorities, and all interested and qualified people. The EEO Coordinator is Tim West, S-105 Agricultural Science North, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40546-0091.
