Director of Orchestra

Tenure Track Position

University of South Dakota Department of Music

Position:  Full-time, nine-month, tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor. Seeking a dynamic professional whose primary responsibilities are to direct the University Symphony Orchestra and collaborate with colleagues to manage the operation of the string area (including scholarship management, recruitment, program growth and development, etc). Secondary responsibilities may include but are not limited to: teach courses in conducting, string methods, music technology, and/or applied studio lessons, and teach courses within the music education curriculum. Other duties may include but are not limited to: conduct the opera orchestra, coordinating string recruitment events, serve as Director or Assistant Director of the USD Summer Music Camp, and other responsibilities as appropriate to appointee’s qualifications and departmental needs. As part of a normal workload you may be asked to teach online courses. Excellence in teaching and recruiting is expected -- both in the classroom, on the campus, and in the greater community. Appointment begins August 22, 2024.

Qualifications:    Doctorate in performance, instrumental conducting, or music education required, ABD considered. Candidates must clearly demonstrate a successful track record in leading an orchestra. Previous teaching experience and leadership of a orchestra program is preferred. Experience with music education programs desirable.

Rank and  Salary:  Assistant or Associate Professor, salary based on qualifications with a starting salary of $50,000.  US Sponsorship is not available for this position.
