The Department of Fashion Design at the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, beginning in August of 2025. Program Profile
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Fashion Design is situated within a world-class interdisciplinary fine art school. Offering extensive undergraduate course offerings, and a Master of Fine Art Degree in Fashion, Body and Garment, the department serves students at varying stages of their academic training in fashion design and related fields. Students study an approach to design rooted in a conceptual understanding of fashion, engaging a range of research practices, design, and construction methodologies. SAIC fashion students benefit from a rigorous artistic and professionally oriented curriculum that engages in current conversation at the forefront of art and design.

Responsibilities
Full-time faculty in Fashion Design teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC.
The successful candidate will teach the intermediate and advanced design and construction curriculum, including courses emphasizing sustainability and sustainable design practices, digital advances in fashion technology (such as Clo 3D), and conceptual approaches to fashion within the intersection of art and design. Full-time faculty in Fashion Design support students through their year-end presentation experiences, guiding them in the installation and showcasing of their work, the documentation of their practice, as well as 2D and 3D photo and video shoots for editorial, branding, documentation, and digital portfolio development. Full-time faculty across the school participate in the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, school governance, and service.
Qualifications
An MFA or a terminal degree in a relevant field of study is preferred. Significant teaching experience is preferred.
The ideal candidate has a current, active, and robust professional design, artistic, or research practice. Applicants should have developed and presented innovative fashion collections, either within a fashion house or under their own label or have actively participated in exhibitions or published and presented their research. Candidates who have a sustainability focused practice, a practice based in technology, such as Clo-3D or AI, or a distinct innovative construction skill set are encouraged to apply. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field of fashion. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration as service will be expected.
