The Department of Film (ELO) is the only university-level film school in Finland. It is a vibrant combination of a creative art academy, and an active research unit focused on practical productions. Lecturer in Costume Design

The position is a full-time permanent lecturer position. The position will be filled at either University Teacher, Lecturer, or University Lecturer level according to Aalto University career system. Please see more information on the lecturer track here: Lecturer career system

Overview
We are looking for a lecturer with a vision of the future of costume design in the performing arts and/or film, specifically focusing on educating new creative professionals in the field of costume design. We are looking for a person with professional experience in costume design in the performing arts and/or film combined with teaching experience and pedagogical skills. In this teaching-focused position, you will have a chance to make an impact on students who are studying at both Bachelor and Master level. The position will begin the earliest in January 2026 or as agreed.

Responsibilities
The lecturer will be working in the major of Costume Design: Performing Arts and Film in the Department of Film. The work mainly consists of teaching duties, guiding and advising students’ theses at BA and MA level, students’ guidance in Personal Study Planning (HOPS), and administrative tasks including teaching planning, resourcing/budget planning, and coordinating guest teachers. Most of the costume design courses are taught by the lecturer. The lecturer also acts as the teacher responsible for Bachelor and/or Master courses and invites visitors to teach and familiarizes them with the work. Teaching is both in small and large groups in the form of lectures, practical exercises, workshops and productions. The lecturer will have interaction with the students and must be able to guide the students in the teaching situation, supporting their own artistic orientation. The lecturer is responsible for the curriculum planning and development independently, as well as in collaboration with the other academic staff of the Department of Film and with partner institutions such as the University of the Arts Helsinki (Taideyliopisto), especially the Theatre Academy (TEAK). Co-teaching and co-learning play an important role in the costume design major, so planning courses and projects in collaboration with other teachers is a natural part of the work. The lecturer's job description also includes participating in student admissions.
The emphasis of the lecturer’s responsibility is on teaching. Aalto University's Department of Film supports the possibility for staff to do their own artistic work, for which short-term unpaid leave can be granted upon agreement with the department. The teaching language is Finnish, working language is Finnish and English.

Requirements
The lecturer in Costume Design is required to have at least a university master's degree. In addition, professional artistic/practice-based work in the field of costume design in the performing arts and/or film, teaching experience and/or supervising/advising experience in higher education institutions and/or vocational education are required.
Professional artistic experience in more than one area of costume design practice (theatre, process-based and devised performances, dance, opera/musical performance, circus, other performance projects, film, television etc.) is an additional merit. Additional merits also include experience in curriculum development, pedagogical studies, experience in developing teaching with partners in the education sector, and/or interest in research. Good knowledge of Finnish and English is essential.

Maximum 10 projects (indicate the most important five with an asterisk): please include a paragraph (up to 300 words) outlining the nature of the project, and your artistic contribution and responsibility in it.

Application process
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a teaching demonstration in English and interviews in October 2025. The shortlisted applicants’ materials will also be submitted for review by 1-2 external experts in Finland and/or internationally.
